Terbentuknya PMK ITB diawali oleh beberapa mahasiswa Kristen yang rindu untuk berdoa dan bersekutu bersama. Pada tahun 1960-an akhir, lembaga pelayanan Navigator memberikan pembinaan Alkitab pada mereka. Beberapa tahun setelahnya, di awal 1970-an, Ibu Dorothy I. Marx, dosen agama Kristen ITB (yang pensiun pada tahun 2005), membentuk persekutuan kecil di rumah beliau untuk para mahasiswa Kristen itu. 10-20 orang berkumpul secara informal dengan rutin. Dari persekutuan itu, lahirlah Lembaga Pelayanan Open House (kini telah bergabung dengan Perkantas). Saat itu, belum dikenal nama PMK.
Waktu berlalu. Allah bekerja dalam persekutuan itu. Dari tahun ke tahun, anggota persekutuan itu bertambah banyak. Kepengurusan persekutuan secara informal terbentuk, dan beregenerasi dari tahun ke tahun. Sayang, pada waktu itu struktur kepengurusannya masih belum diketahui secara pasti. Dibentuknya Dewan Mahasiswa ITB pada pertengahan tahun 70-an memberikan tempat bagi persekutuan itu di bawah Seksi Kerohanian Kristen Dewan Mahasiswa. Pada akhir 70-an, saat Dewan Mahasiswa dibubarkan, persekutuan Kristen itu tidak terpengaruh.
Baru pada awal tahun 80-an mulai dikenal istilah PMK walaupun masih bersifat informal. Sejak itu pertumbuhan PMK semakin pesat. Pada akhir tahun 80-an, permasalahan status PMK yang belum resmi mulai muncul, dan ini merupakan pergumulan yang harus diputuskan oleh pengurus pada saat itu. Status PMK akhirnya resmi diakui sebagai salah satu unit kegiatan di bawah Koordinator Bidang Pendidikan dengan nama Persekutuan Mahasiswa Kristen ITB, dan tanggal 30 November 1990 dijadikan hari jadi PMK. Itulah cikal bakal PMK ITB yang kita kenal sekarang.
Tujuan PMK adalah membekali, melatih dan mengutus mahasiswa Kristen ITB untuk memasuki kehidupan masyarakat dan profesi. PMK ITB berasaskan Alkitab sebagai Firman Tuhan–oleh karena itu, setiap pengurus harus melakukan tugasnya dengan dasar Alkitab. Prinsip keorganisasian PMK adalah interdenominasi, tidak menginduk pada lembaga, gereja atau organisasi apapun. Hingga kini, PMK ITB terus melayani dengan aktif, agar mahasiswa Kristen ITB mampu menjadi pelita bagi diri sendiri, berkat untuk masyarakat, dan sokoguru bagi pembangunan Indonesia.
PMK ITB started as a group of Christian students seeking to pray together. In the late 1960’s, Navigator, a ministry organization, started making Bible studies for them. A few years later, in the early 1970’s, Mrs. Dorothy I. Marx, a Christian religious studies teacher in ITB (which retired in 2005) started a small fellowship for Christian students at her home, which was routinely attended by 10-20 people. From that fellowship, the Open House ministry organization (which has since came under Perkantas) was born. At that time, the name PMK was not yet known.
Time passed. God worked wonders in this fellowship. From year to year, it grew in numbers. An informal leadership was formed. The creation of Dewan Mahasiswa ITB (ITB Student Council) in the mid-70’s gave a place for the fellowship under the council’s Christian religion section. Even as the ITB Student Council was disbanded in the late 70’s, the fellowship continued.
The name PMK started to be known informally around the early 80’s. Its informal status was beginning to become a concern by the late 80’s, prompting its leaders at that time to find a solution. The fellowship was finally formally recognized as a student activity unit under the Education Section Coordinator on 30 November 1990, as Persekutuan Mahasiswa Kristen ITB.
PMK strives to equip, train and send ITB Christian students to minister to their society and in their professions. PMK believes in the Bible as the divine Word of God – every action must be based on the Scripture. PMK is interdenominational in principle and is not under any organization or church. PMK ITB continues to actively serve so that its members can be a light for themselves, a blessing for their society, and a pillar for Indonesia’s development.
